Being Beyond. Virtual Group Therapy for Transgender, Nonbinary, and Gender Nonconforming Adults.

Being Beyond is group therapy for transgender, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming adults across Canada. Are you feeling isolated or unsure how or where to find genuine acceptance and belonging? Being Beyond was designed for those navigating gender identity, dysphoria, stigma, or minority stress. Participants are able to connect with others who understand the complexities, challenges, and joys of living as a gender-diverse person.

For transgender adults, accessing mental health support can be challenging. Traditional therapy settings often fail to fully recognize or affirm diverse gender identities, leaving many people feeling misunderstood. Being Beyond addresses these gaps by creating a space where participants can yap, process, and discuss community-relevant topics.

Group Therapy offers unique benefits. Participants gain the opportunity to connect with others who share similar experiences, reducing feelings of isolation and otherness. By witnessing each other’s journeys, sharing challenges, and celebrating successes, members develop a sense of resilience and empowerment. This type of therapeutic connection not only supports mental health but also fosters meaningful relationships.

Being Beyond stands out because it is intentionally designed to be affirming, inclusive, and community-centered. Each monthly Group Therapy session is facilitated by two licensed mental health professionals who self-identify as 2SLGBTQIAP+, ensuring that participants are supported by clinicians who understand lived experiences of gender diversity. The approach is trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and neurodiversity-affirming, prioritizing safety, respect, harm reduction, and authentic connection over rigid therapeutic models.

Beyond traditional therapy, this group emphasizes collaboration and mutual care. Group therapy can help us practice social skills, setting boundaries, and accepting responsibility. Abilities that are vital in creating the communities we all need to survive.

Being Beyond is designed for transgender, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming adults (18+) across Canada who are seeking a safe, affirming space to connect with others who share similar experiences. This therapeutic group is for anyone interested in community, validation, and reflection.

It doesn’t matter if you are exploring your gender identity, navigating a medical or social transition, or simply looking for consistent support and connection, this group offers an accessible alternative to 1:1 therapy. Participants do not need prior therapy experience, a diagnosis, or a specific identity label to join.

Each monthly Being Beyond session is held virtually using Jane Telehealth Software, ensuring your information remains secure and confidential. Once you register, you will receive a welcome email from Jane and be asked to complete an intake form, including the confidentiality section, to help create a safe and trusting environment. This Being Beyond Cohort will meet once a month for 1 hour 2:00 -3:00 pm CST.  The group will include 7-10 participants and last for 4 months. January-April.

Sessions are facilitated by two licensed mental health professionals who self-identify as 2SLGBTQIAP+, ensuring affirming, trauma-informed guidance. Kate (she/they) (CCC) will be the main facilitator.  Participants can expect a mix of structured and open discussion, including check-ins, sharing experiences, and exploring the challenges and joys of life as a gender-diverse person. Sessions may also include grounding exercises, psychoeducation, storytelling, and creative activities to foster self-expression, reflection, and connection. The group emphasizes mutual respect, consent, and collaboration, creating a space where participants can engage in meaningful personal growth.

Canada’s vast geography and dispersed population can make accessing affirming mental health care challenging, especially for transgender, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming adults. Virtual Group Therapy removes many of these barriers, allowing participants from across the country — including rural, remote, and northern communities — to join safely and conveniently.

Jane Telehealth Software makes it possible to access professional, confidential care without worrying about travel, safety, or limited local options. Virtual delivery also makes it easier for participants to fit therapy into their schedules, creating consistent access to support and community. You don’t even need a computer with a webcam, you can join this group directly from your cellphone! In a country where in-person affirming services may be scarce, virtual Group Therapy ensures that mental health resources are available.

Participants in Being Beyond Group Therapy can expect a range of emotional, social, and personal benefits. Engaging with others who share similar experiences can reduce feelings of isolation, validate individual identities, and help participants develop a stronger sense of belonging. Many people who participated in group therapy report increased self-acceptance, improved emotional regulation, and greater resilience in navigating challenges related to gender identity and minority stress.

Research shows that group therapy is as effective as individual therapy, and often more efficient. “Given that group therapy is a triple-E treatment, which means it’s effective, it’s equivalent to individual therapy for most conditions, and it’s efficient, offering at least one extra group or beginning to run a group, particularly in private practice, would create enormous efficiencies in the system,” said Martyn Whittingham, PhD, a licensed psychologist in Ohio and the developer of Focused Brief Group Therapy.

The registration form asks for basic information to help create a safe and supportive environment, including your preferred name and pronouns, legal name and health card number, address, self-identifying label, information for your 1:1 therapist (if you have one), and any accessibility needs. This ensures that facilitators can provide affirming, inclusive care and accommodate participants’ needs while maintaining confidentiality and safety.

By joining, you are stepping into a community that values authenticity, mutual care, and collective healing. Whether you are seeking connection, personal growth, or simply a space to be yourself without judgment,  we can’t wait to get to know you better.

Joining Being Beyond Group Therapy is simple. To get started, email hello@theircollective.ca or follow this link to receive the registration form. Once the form is completed, you will receive information directly from the group facilitator about the next steps and upcoming session.
