Celebrate National Indigenous History Month and Pride with a powerful, reflective virtual session.

Join us on June 30, 2026, for an inspiring webinar facilitated by Syndel Thomas Kozar, a University of Saskatchewan Master’s of Indigenous Studies student. Grounded in community work with Indigenous youth, this interactive presentation explores ribbon pants as a vibrant vehicle for cultural reclamation, self-expression, and Two-Spirit resurgence.

Far beyond simple garments, regalia is a deeply personal bridge to identity, belonging, and healing. This session looks closely at how creating and wearing regalia helps us reconnect with ourselves, our ancestors, and our wider communities.

What We Will Explore:

  • Beyond the Binary: Open, respectful conversations surrounding the gendering of traditional ribbon wear. We will examine how rigid definitions of femininity and gender roles in ribbon skirts are frequently shaped by colonial influence, and how ribbon pants offer a meaningful alternative for expressing fluid identity, culture, and individuality.

  • Tradition Meets Living Expression: Moving past a framework of opposition, we look at how ribbon pants and ribbon skirts coexist. This session honors regalia as living, highly adaptable, and beautifully reflective of diverse contemporary experiences.

  • The Concept of “Coming In”: Drawing closely on foundational Indigenous teachings surrounding gender, Two-Spirit identity, and the transformational concept of "coming in" as shared by Dr. Alex Wilson, we will map out what it means to return safely to self, culture, and community.

  • Art as Wellness: Through shared storytelling, historical and modern visual examples, and intentional guided reflection, participants will learn how culturally grounded art practices directly support 2SLGBTQIA+ wellness, balancing deep tradition with continuous growth.
